Detecting Exoplanet Magnetic Fields

چکیده

Planetary magnetic fields shield life from harmful radiation, but current terrestrial exoplanet magnetic field strength estimates predict signals too weak and too low frequency to detect. However, timely coronal mass ejections may boost signal strengths enough, and a radio telescope array placed on the Moon could detect the low frequencies emitted. Once built, this telescope should monitor exoplanets Gliese876 d, 55Cnc e, and GJ1214 b.

Exoplanet-Induced Chromospheric Activity: Realistic Light Curves from Solar-type Magnetic Fields

There is growing observational evidence for some kind of interaction between stars and close-in extrasolar giant planets. Shkolnik et al. reported variability in the chromospheric Ca H and K lines of HD 179949 and υ And that seemed to be phased with the planet’s orbital period, instead of the stellar rotational period. However, the observations also indicate that the chromospheric light curves ...

On the Possibility of Detecting Class A Stellar Engines Using Exoplanet Transit Curves

The Class A stellar engine (also known as a Shkadov thruster) is a spherical arc mirror, designed to use the impulse from a star’s radiation pressure to generate a thrust force, perturbing the star’s motion. If this mirror obstructs part of the stellar disc during the transit of an exoplanet, then this may be detected by studying the shape of the transit light curve, presenting another potentia...

Magnetic Origins of the Stellar Mass-obliquity Correlation in Planetary Systems

Detailed observational characterization of transiting exoplanet systems has revealed that the spin-axes of massive (   M M 1.2 ) stars often exhibit substantial misalignments with respect to the orbits of the planets they host. Conversely, lower-mass stars tend to only have limited obliquities. A similar trend has recently emerged within the observational data set of young stars’ magnetic fie...

Seismic constraints on rotation of Sun-like star and mass of exoplanet.

Rotation is thought to drive cyclic magnetic activity in the Sun and Sun-like stars. Stellar dynamos, however, are poorly understood owing to the scarcity of observations of rotation and magnetic fields in stars. Here, inferences are drawn on the internal rotation of a distant Sun-like star by studying its global modes of oscillation. We report asteroseismic constraints imposed on the rotation ...

Towards the Albedo of an Exoplanet: MOST Satellite Observations of Bright Transiting Exoplanetary Systems

The Canadian MOST satellite is a unique platform for observations of bright transiting exoplanetary systems. Providing nearly continuous photometric observations for up to 4 weeks, MOST can produce important observational data to help us learn about the properties of exosolar planets. We review our current observations of HD 209458 and HD 189733 with implications for the albedo and our progress...
